Beautiful From their wild ancestors in the Middle East, cultivated roses spread throughout the ancient civilized world. The historian Herodotus, writing in the 5th century BC, was already referring to a 'sixty-petalled' rose. Some 1,200 years later over 60 different kinds of rose were to be found in the gardens of the Frankish emperor Charlemagne.
